"This is a great idea. We love to get folks out on their boats having fun in a non-competitive manner."

Summer Sailstice to donate funds based on sign-ups for its June 21, 2003 event

Summer Sailstice is pleased to announce it’s first alliance since it’s inception with Seacology (www.seacology.org), a global non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation of island ecosystems and cultures.

Through the alliance, Seacology will receive $1 for every sailor registered for Summer Sailstice, supported by donations from West Marine, private individuals, Summer Sailstice and Seacology board members.

"Summer Sailstice was created to give the sailors a simple, fun way to get together and celebrate sailing, one of the world’s most pleasureable pastimes," said John Arndt, Summer Sailstice founder. "Concurrently, we intended for Summer Sailstice to make a positive contribution to the environment all sailors use and enjoy. Since islands are often the image that beckon so many sailors, the importance of maintaining the health of these island ecosystems and cultures felt like a cause all sailors could embrace."

Seacology’s executive director, Duane Silverstein said, "We are delighted that several donors have pledged to contribute one dollar to Seacology for each person who signs up with Summer Sailstice and goes sailing on June 21. I can't think of a more enjoyable way for people to help protect our beautiful oceans."

For sailors, supporting Seacology is a way of ‘preserving the dream’: the dream to sail to island destinations and the goal to actually find the island of one’s dreams not one spoiled by commercial interests, local abuse or even previous cruisers. Towards that end, Seacology has already supported the deployment of mooring buoys in sensitive reef areas in Tonga, Papua New Guinea and Banco Chinchorro (off the east coast of Mexico).

Generous supporters of the Summer Sailstice-Seacology collaboration include Graham Farrar (S/V Pau Hana), Summer Sailstice organizers, West Marine, Andy Spiegel and Katie Smith, and Seacology Board members.
