The 44th Scotch Bonnet Light Race, the traditional "Rite of Passage" for local sailors to test their mettle, will start Friday, June 19th, from the mouth of the Genesee River at the Port of Rochester, NY. We race overnight across Lake Ontario to round the Scotch Bonnet Island Light off the south coast of Canada and back, a distance of 82 nautical miles or more. It is the first major sailing event on the lake each summer.
All offshore capable boats are welcome to compete in at least six divisions, including several spinnaker and Genoa-only classes, double handed, and more. For family members and others staying ashore after the racers depart, a Sailstice Celebration potluck party is held on our beautiful patio overlooking the Genesee River. Weather permitting, we take a few boats out to watch the start and take photos. Racers are welcomed back on Saturday with hot meals and an opportunity to review the results board and debrief with other participants.
An awards ceremony and picnic are held on Sunday afternoon, with live music and festivities open to family and friends of participants. Several perpetual awards are presented as well as trophies for Division winners.
