Surprise, you're a winner! In addition to sailing on Summer Sailstice, Calvin Liebel wrote in to tell us about his family's Summer Sailstice party with the Regina Beach Yacht Club after discovering he'd won a North Sails Backpack - and we'd somehow missed sending it to him. How do these things happen? Anyway, after squaring away his prize winnings (thank you, North Sails) we heard a little more about Calvin and his family's Summer Sailstice celebration.

Calvin and family celebrated the longest sailing days of the year with the Regina Beach Yacht Club in Saskatchewan, Canada. Like everyone in the Northern latitudes, the RBYC enjoys longer days of sailing than the rest of us during the month of June so there's even more reason and time to celebrate.

As Calvin described, 'We had a great day last summer, the club held some round the buoys races followed by an afternoon Beer Keg party with lots of Jimmy Buffett and reggae. Later in the evening the club held our first Wine and Cheese Tasting party. This was our second year celebrating Sailstice and we hope to expand and aim for more involvement next year. Thanks for giving us a really great excuse to get out on the water and have fun.'

Calvin continued, 'Please use what ever you feel will help promote your wonderful dream of a Summer Sailstice Holiday. Just finished reading "Random Acts of Sailing" in Sailing magazine (Sept.'04 issue).'

Since sailing and winning in Saskatchewan, Calvin wrote to give us his new address since he, family, and SV 'Arbutus' were moving to Campbell River, BC. Calvin added, 'I just want to say thanks again for all the time you put into the Summer Sailstice Celebration. When we arrived at our new home out here in BC, the backpack from North was waiting. I am sure it will come in handy when we explore the Gulf Islands this spring. I have asked a few sailors and no one seems to know about the Summer Sailstice here in Campbell River so it looks like we will have to spread the word. Again thanks for dreaming up a great idea, the world needs more parties.'

I guess we couldn't agree more. Sailing has over a 5,000-year history and is one of the main activities that connected up the world through the ages for exploration, trade and pleasure. It still brings people together and connects us all with the world's greatest activity and lifestyle. We sure appreciate folks like Calvin who simply love to get on the water with their family whether in Saskatchewan, British Columbia or anywhere on this watery world. Thanks for joining us in a celebration of sail and for spreading the word wherever 'Arbutus' takes you.
