Word around the San Francisco Bay is that a person can count very few shorelines warm enough for an all day commercial photo shoot featuring swimwear models; in fact, probably fewer than the sum number of fingers on the left hand. And to find those hidden spots, you’ll probably need to ask a sailor.
A conversation that took to heart the discovery of such a sandy pocket suited for bikini warmth was taken up a few months back while planning the 10th annual Summer Sailstice at Treasure Island. The objective for that conversation was to create a logical and appropriate event to add to Sailstice activities. “In many circles, sailing and swimwear are best mates on the water,” said John Cabrall, organizer of Got Wind and Water, a Bay Area-based sailing group. “But seeing the two combined in San Francisco Bay is a rarity --unless you know the right sheltered coves. Staging a professional photo shoot with swimwear models in this part of the world is an even more uncommon event.”
Cabrall facilitated an introduction between Summer Sailstice creator and Latitude 38 associate publisher, John Arndt, and Renegade Photo Shoots founder Martha Blanchfield to move the rarity one step closer to reality. Notes Arndt, “Summer Sailstice has grown steadily in past years and the addition of a professional photography workshop made sense. We liked that this event not only introduced more individuals to the sport and lifestyle of sailing, but allowed for mixing and mingling between photographer and sailor during the time photo set-ups were staged on the boats.” Blanchfield added, “Being able to work within appropriate environments helps authenticate a swimwear photography workshop. Photographers had the opportunity to shoot along the shoreline adjacent to the festival, used the cove’s nautical bustle of activity as backdrop, and framed great imagery while on deck.”
About the Shoot
Several Renegade photographers took advantage of the sailing opportunity offered through Got Wind and Water by traveling by boat to and from the photo shoot Saturday morning. Over the course of several hours, photographers participated in an educational workshop with instruction lead by Shelah Osbrink and Robin Bourbonnais of Sweet Light Studios. A variety of commercial photography looks were staged that used natural and studio lighting. Five professional models were tapped to pose in a minimum of two different looks per.
