SHYC Summer Sailstice Anchoring Cruise – Fun in the Sun
The SHYC Summer Sailstice was kicked off Friday night by watching Captain Ron, where we learned that if “anything's gonna happen it's gonna happen out there”. Saturday we started to Little Bay with little to no wind. As we were arriving to Little Bay the Stingray Harbour Yacht Club boats were greeted by our mascot, stingrays. They were incredible. By mid afternoon Little Bay had over 25 sailboats anchored, 20 belonged to the SHYC Members.
There were a lot of activities planned and SHYC members could participate in all, a few or just enjoy the beach. This year there were fewer people participating in the team game, since most people were still on their sailboat assuring that their boat were holding their anchorage. (The little to no wind turned into 30mph winds.) The team game was run by Pat & Roland on Sable. We were broken into 4 teams. We started out with an egg toss and then each team was given a plastic bag with 6 feet of string, a roll of electrical tape and an orange. The teams were sent out with the challenge of building a boat with these items and what ever they found on the beach. In 30 minutes these boats were going to race to shore carrying the orange. Looking at the boats the catamaran looked like a sure bet, but it was the crocs monohull which won out in the end.
“It’s 5 o’clock somewhere”… the somewhere was Pirates Beach once again. This was the beginning of the drinking contest (drink recipe, of course) and appetizers. Even with the wind and drizzle, almost everyone shown up. The contest started with Pete from Solemn Vow with his Thai Sunset. It was a very unusual drink that was very refreshing. We had some very creative drinks including color (The Brigadoon Woo-Woo) to garnishes with Starboard and Port lights (Lime wedges and Strawberries for the drink Rum Aweigh with Me concocted by Sandpiper.) We ended with The Happy Pucker. The 1st and 2nd place was separated by 1 point. The first place went to the Thai Sunset and the 2nd place was The Happy Pucker. I wonder if there is an advantage to going first and last?
Winning Drink Recipes.
Thai Sunset – 1st Place
(Concocted by Pete on Solemn Vow)
10 Thai Basil Leaves
10 Mint Leaves
10 Cilantro Leaves
½ oz Ginger Simple Syrup*
½ oz vanilla Spice Rum
½ oz unsweetened coconut milk (just the cream from the top where it has separated)
½ oz fresh lime juice
1 oz ginger beer
Add the basil, mint and cilantro in a tall glass with the simple syrup. Then gently smash the herbs into the simple syrup with a muddler (a long wooden device or you can use the back of a wooden spoon if one isn't available). Stir in the rum and coconut cream. Top off with the ginger beer and lime juice. Garnish with a mint sprig.
* To make Ginger Simple Syrup boil 2 cup of sugar with 1 cup of water along with slices of fresh ginger. Stir until all the sugar has been dissolve. Then drain the ginger slices from the syrup.

6 parts pink lemonade
1 part frozen limoncello
1 part peach schnapps
1 part vodka
Mix thoroughly and serve in a tall glass with a lot of ice. Garnish with lemon slices.
Brigadoon Woo-Woo - 3rd Place
(Concocted by Kim on Brigadoon)
1 cup tropical schnapps
½ cup Blue Curaco
¼ cup clear rum
1/8 cup Bananas 99
1 ½ cup pineapple juice
Combine all ingredients and chill. Serve over ice with pineapple chunk garnish. Yield 3 ½
After the drink contest it was time to break open the Sun Piñata. I think we should rename this The Lazy Sailors Piñata, since everyone sat around waiting for someone to break the piñata open. This was no easy task; finally the goodies came falling out, with a little help from Joe. Next was the famous Limbo Hook. Once again we had a large participation since the prize was a $50 gift certificate from Cocomo’s. Loretta, a guess on Playing Hooky was the most flexible that night. The drizzle had stopped by the tiome we finished the Limbo Hook and everyone gather around the campfire for good conversation, hotdogs, chicken sausages and S’mores.
Sunday morning the sailors gathered for breakfast on the beach and the SHYC Summer Sailstice Headquarters was broken down followed by a thorough clean up on Pirates Beach. We all sailed back with our burgees flying proud and wishing, once again, that the week-end was longer just like the daylight!
