Fundy Flotilla celebrates at 45N/67W

Points East magazine, based in Portland, Maine, has participated in three of the four Summer Sailstice events in conjunction with their annual Fundy Flotilla cruise 'Down East'. The Maine/Canada border is at about 45N so they enjoy some very long days of sailing that far North. Here's a note from Bernie Wideman of 'Points East' and host of the Fundy Flotilla.

'Here're the crews from the 27 boats that took part in Fundy Flotilla 2004. You'll notice that the woman kneeling in front is holding the Summer Sailstice flag. The photo was taken following the crew meeting on June 19. The flotilla set sail (the powerboats set sail only in the figurative sense) early June 20th for the 60-mile cruise to Cutler. The weather – as you can see by the photo – was rainy on the 19th, but the cold front blew through with great claps of thunder during the overnight and the 20th was a day of bright sun and fresh westerly breezes. The sailboat crews said it was one of the best daysails they'd ever had. Long Live the Summer Sailstice.

(After Cutler the Flotilla entered Canada at Grand Manan. Subsequent ports of call were St. Andrews, where the flotilla took part in the nearly rained-out 400th anniversary of the first French settlement in North America, at St. Croix Island at the head of Passamaquoddy Bay, the St. John River, followed by a return to Eastport for that city's famous July 4th celebration.)'

If you've never sailed way 'down East' the Fundy Flotilla is a great way to go and by doing it annual on Summer Sailstice the timing couldn't be better.
