Illinois - Summer Solstice = Prairie Sailstice!

Island Bay Yacht Club's David Stjern is introducing Summer Sailstice to the membership for 2012:

Summer Sailstice is a global sailing celebration (“Sail locally, celebrate globally”) held on the weekend closest to the summer solstice, the longest sailing day of the year.

This year IBYC and the Cabin Fleet will host Lake Springfield’s own Summer Sailstice celebration on the summer solstice, Wednesday, June 20, 2012. As other venues have named their events, we’re calling ours the Prairie Sailstice.

The Club is providing the Sailing Pavilion for our use. There will be sailboat racing that evening and sailors are encouraged to come out to sail that afternoon or early evening. Cabin Fleeters are good about get- ting people out on the water to try sailing, and if anyone contacts me, I’ll try to match them up with a skipper to get them out on the water.

After sailing, all sailors, sailing supporters, and people who have ever seen a sail in the distance are invited to retire to the Pavilion where there will be food and soda provided beginning at 6:00 p.m. until the boats are put away (BYOB). We’d especially like to see the junior sailors and their parents hang out with the less junior sailors. We encourage the Boy Scouts to get their Catalinas out that night and the Sea Scouts to join us.

A celebration of summer and sailing – what’s not to like?
