North Dakota joins Sailstice for 2008

For 2008 we happy to report a group of sailors gathered to celebrate the Sailstice on Lake Sakakawea, a 170 mile long lake with 1200 hundred miles of shoreline - and pirates.

Mike & Cissie Quinn and friends gathered a five boat flotilla to challenge the high seas of Lake Sakakawea for Summer Sailstice and from what we can see there couldn't have been many better places to spend Sailstice.  Good friends, a collection of fine sailboats, a protected anchorage, beautiful blues skies - there isn't anything we can see missing for a idyllic mid-West salute to sailing.

The word from Mike and Cissie: We had a great sail for the sailstice. Good winds sent us to Whitmeyer Bay on Friday about six miles west on the lake. Saturday winds were light and the fleet went to Berthold Bay. The attached pictures are from Berthold Bay. The boats rafted up and everyone shared some good eats. A perfect evening with total calm let everyone sleep tied to shore. Both Saturday and Sunday we had some great hikes. Wind was perfect going back and Cissie, my wife, did not want to stop sailing. Six boats particiapated from a 28 foot Oday to a 37.5 Hunter. I have attached a few pictures, you are welcome to use any of them. If I can get a picture from another sailor of me doing a flip off the back of my boat I will send it to you. Mikr

A successful flip is just part of a successful Sailstice!

Here's a picture of myself (Mike Quinn) doing my granny flip from the back of my boat. The picture is midway through the rotation. I do the flip every year on the solstice to honer my grandmother who used to have a stiff drink and do a flip.

Berthold Bay provided an idyllic setting for a Sailstice celebration.

Evening on Lake Sakakawea shows the magic of finding your sailing escape can be found almost anywhere.
