SHYC Summer Sailstice Anchoring Cruise - Fun in the Sun

It would have made a great painting as the SHYC sailboats started arriving in Little Bay. (Except for Liberty, who left at sunrise to assure that there would be a place on Pirates Beach for the event.) There was a family of dolphins dancing around the boats already anchored, having a joyous time being the welcoming committee. Pirates Beach has Chesapeake Bay on one side and Little Bay on the other. By mid afternoon Little Bay had over 20 sailboats anchored, 17 which belonged to the SHYC Members, and the sailors on "Pirates Beach" outnumbered the usual powerboats anchored on the tip of the island. The once deserted beach turned into a beach covered with umbrellas and dingys from sailors fulfilling the quest of the slogan “Party like a Sailor”.

There were a lot of activities planned and SHYC members could participate in all, a few or just enjoy the beach. Once on the beach the Bocce’ Ball and Horseshoe Tournaments began. The Horseshoe Tournament won on Saturday by Joe on Island Time.
The Bocce’ Ball Tournament continued into Sunday and was won by Chris on Sable. The first scheduled (we use that term loosely) event was the “Treasures of the Sun” challenge headed By CJ on Chilkat II. It started with three teams which included relays with word puzzle and an eating contest ending with a treasure hunt with a buried treasure. The overall winner of “Treasures of the Sun” was Kim on Brigadoon. (Way to go Kim!)

“It’s 5 o’clock somewhere” the somewhere was
Pirates Beach. This was the beginning of the drinking contest (drink recipe, of course) and appetizers. This year there was one of two common ingredients; most of the drinks either had some sort of coconut or some sort of pomegranate. However, the contest started without either of these ingredients beginning utilized. Vicki and Ken on Luna Loca started with Sol Sail which was a drink that tasted like a key lime pie. (Yummy.)

Winning Drink Recipes.

Tiki Rose - 1st Place
(Concocted by Mary & Joe on Island Time)

* 4 part Pineapple Juice
* 2 part Mt Gay Rum
* 1 part Mt Gay Mango Rum
* 1 part Cointreau
* 1 part Pomegranate Syrup
* 1 part Fresh Lime Juice
* 1 Lime slice and wedge
* 1 Mt Gay Rum soaked cherry* (optional)

Mix first 6 ingredients in a cocktail shaker. Place a Mt Gay Rum soaked cherry in bottom of glass, then a slice of lime followed by ice. Pour mixture from Cocktail shaker into glass. Garnish with a wedge of lime and a cute umbrella.

* To make the Mt Gay Rum soaked cherries, with pit removed, in Mt Gay Rum overnight.
Tropical Delight - 2nd Place
(Concocted by Wes and CJ on Chilkat II)

The Tropical Delight is best made in a one gallon container, because it goes down so smooth and everybody will be asking for more! (These are rough approximations that can be modified to suit the taste of each individual bar tender wannabe.)

* 48 oz orange juice
* 32 oz pineapple juice
* 12 oz coconut milk
* 20 oz coconut rum
* 16 oz spiced ru

Mix thoroughly and often, and serve in a tall glass with a lot of ice on a hot summer day for a truly refreshing tropical delight.
Sol Sail - 3rd Place
(Concocted by Vicki & Ken on Luna Loca)

* 1 oz #43 Liquor (Spanish)
* 1 oz lime juice
* 1 oz half & half

Sprinkle graham cracker crumbs on top if they won't stick around the rim.

As the Sun was setting, out came the Limbo Hook. We had the largest participation this year; Judy on See Nurse was the most flexible this night. (How does she bend like that?) Even though the sun was setting there was still light coming from the campfire. Everyone that was left on the beach enjoyed good conversation, hotdogs, chicken sausages and S’mores.

Sunday morning about half the sailors gathered for breakfast on the beach. Then the SHYC Summer Sailstice Headquarters was broken down followed by a thorough clean up on Pirates Beach. We all sailed back with our burgees flying proud and wishing that the week-end was longer just like the daylight!
