Sailing enthusiasts must stop by The Bay Area Association of Disabled Sailors booth at Saturday's 2012 SUMMER SAILSTICE Festival in San Francisco. This fantastic event kicks off at 9 a.m. and is a great opportunity for avid sailors and those interested in sailing to learn more about BAADS.
The 2012 San Francisco Bay’s SUMMER SAILSTICE Festival is part of the Summer Sailstice global sailing holiday held annually on the weekend closest to the summer solstice. Guided by an organizing committee of sailing organizations and businesses, the festival provides a sustainable, fun, and free way to celebrate with others who enjoy sailing. The event will host a Boat Building Contest and a Sunset Photo Contest, sailboat rides, seminars, exhibits, and musical performances by an array of talented musicians.
The event also includes a chance for sailors to participate in the annual Estuary Stroll, Circuit Race, and Small Boat Regatta. For children, the festival provides a Kid Zone, which includes a jump house, face painting, nautical coloring, and more! Look for the Food Court featuring cuisine from The All American, New Englander, and Taste of Baja.
BAADS is a premiere San Francisco based nonprofit that provides sailing and race programs on keelboats and small boats to people with any kind of disability. Group members and volunteers will offer free rides Saturday in their dinghies and will pass out brochures and answer questions, said Christina Kho, a spokeswoman for BAADS.
The Bay Area Association of Disabled Sailors (BAADS) seeks to make all aspects of sailing accessible. It is a 501(c)3 tax-exempt charitable organization dedicated to providing sailing and race programs on keelboats and small boats to people with all disability types. Participants vary from novice to experts and through the sailing programs, they learn to sail by themselves and as part of a crew on boats specially rigged with adaptive features to aid them and make sailing in San Francisco Bay possible. Since 1987, BAADS has been an all-volunteer organization relying on donations and grants to provide the best sailing programs to its members.
