Clipper Race participant New York celebrated Summer Sailstice in the North Atlantic

The longest day of the year and we are spending it in the glorious Atlantic. Well glorious might be a little optimistic with Tropical Cyclone Chris just south of us after a few beautiful days of sunshine, a cloudy quite bitter cold day as the wind and sea state have been increasing slowly all day.

We are one of ten Clipper Race yachts in the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race and nearing the end of our journey, now just 4 weeks away from race finish in Southampton. It was at a stopover in San Francisco in April that we heard about the Summer Sailstice and knowing we would be at sea on the 23rd June, couldn’t help but take part in this monumental event. Knowing that so many people around the world are taking part makes this day very special and we had to remember it somehow! We have many nationalities on board our yacht, from all walks of life but all with a common dream and taking part in a challenge of a lifetime.

For sailing, it has been a great day as we head toward Derry-Londonderry, our next stop in the race in just over a week’s time (we hope). It’s a shame it’s been so cloudy that we missed both the sunrise and sunset on this great day!
