Clipper Fleet joins Summer Sailstice

After sailing over 30,000 miles from the start in Liverpool and with stops in Durban, Fremantle, Singapore, Qingdao and many more on their way around the world the 10 strong fleet of Clipper Race boats are now on their final ocean leg across the North Atlantic.  The leg is 2080 miles and will take them high in the North Atlantic from Sydney, Nova Scotia to Cork, Ireland.

They started in Sydney on 16 June with ‘Durban 2010 and Beyond’ nipping the start and are scheduled to get into Cork on 30 June.
On 21 June the Clipper Fleet will be six days into their race across the Atlantic and located approximately at 47 North 34 West.  That far North they’ll have one of the longest days available to celebrate sailing as the sun will be rising approximately 3:21 UT and setting at 19:15UT.

As they head East towards the British Isles they’ll be headed closer to Stonehenge, one of the first manmade structures built to align with the rays of the sun on the summer solstice.  The last thousand miles of a 35,000-mile circumnavigation are surely bittersweet.  Clearly a voyage of a lifetime worth more than a mid-ocean celebration of sailing but finishing will also be a reluctant close to a rich life chapter for many of the Clipper crew.

Sailors everywhere can celebrate sailing with the Clipper Fleet, follow the race across the Atlantic and check their positions on Summer Sailstice by visiting: http://www.clipperroundtheworld.com/
