Do you need to own a boat to sail?

Lake Merrit Sailing Center in Oakland has been teaching people to sail for 75 years.  It's a gem in the middle of a thriving metropolis offering sailing to the community and no one has to own a boat.  Among the young sailors who started on Lake Merritt is world champion and National Sailing Hall of Fame member Paul Cayard.  It all starts sometime, somewhere and it's easy to start if you don't have to first buy your own boat.

Lake Merritt is a unique saltwater tidal lake conveniently located in the center of downtown Oakland, adjacent to Lakeside Park. Boating programs are offered at Lake Merritt and the Oakland Estuary. Youth and Community Programs provide an entry point to gain skills to explore the wonders of Bay Area boating. Plus they promote the Green revolution: learn sailing and muscle-powered boating!

Lake Merritt has taken the initiative to utilize Summer Sailstice as an opportunity to invite the community out for a sail.  They have the boats, the location and ideal sailing weather so now it's just a matter of getting more people to show up and enjoy.
