Kids in a Candy Store

Kids in a Candy Store

Right now is a fun time to be sailing on San Francisco Bay.  September is one of the most beautiful sailing months of the year and with the America's Cup also in town the Bay is full of sailboats and uber talented sailors.  Yesterday the Red Bull Youth America's Cup finished up with New Zealand taking the top two positions on the podium followed by Portugal in this AC45 one-design fleet.

Olympic gold medalist, Nathan Outteridge and crew, Iain Jensen, gearing up for the 49'er worlds at the Artemis playground in the old Alameda Navy base.

We snapped some pics of the day and then went over to the Artemis compound slated to be closed down at the end of the month.  But the sailing 'kids' ovr at Artemis are having the time of their lives with a full toybox full of sailing craft to play with until the end of the month.  Located there are foiling Moths, 49'ers, A Class cats, F-18s, 49'ers, kiteboards, foiling kiteboards and a Hobie trifoiler was out on the water too.  At the end of the day we caught a few of the 'pros' out sailing - Olympic medalist Chris Draper, Olympic medalist Nathan Outteridge and numerous others just burning up the basin at the old Alameda Naval Air Station.  As we were leaving Rolex Yachtsman of the Year, Johnny Heineken, was showig up to rig up his foiling kiteboard.  It's hard to explain sailing to the world when there is such a wide array of excotic craft to choose from but all of it looked like a blast.

Just a piece of yesterday on San Francisco Bay:

NZ winners of the Red Bull Youth America's Cup

Oracle screamed by on their AC72

The original winner of 'Cup' - the schooner 'America' sailed by.

The Artemis Candy Store - what more could a 'kid' want.  All the sailing toys you could ever want.

Chris Draper gets the hang of a foiling moth.

Two 49'ers, a foiling kiteboard and a Hobie Trifoiler just playing in the breeze.

This isn't your old Alameda Navy base - today's boats are a lot more fun and not painted grey!
