On June 19th, Summer Sailstice was celebrated at Lake Mead by the Hobie Fleet 51, Lake Mead Sailing Club, Las Vegas Sail and Power Squadron and the Nevada Yacht Club.
'I don't think I've ever seen so many boats together, and even if the winds were juuuussst a bit much, it was awesome.' So states the Lake Mead Summer Sailstice Facebook page as Lake Mead sailors gathered like never before to connect with sailors locally and globally. Over 30 boats and 100 people participated in a breezy day of sailing starting at 10am while also gathering ashore after for entertainment ranging from bluegrass music to a burgee making competition.
David Hoch of the Hunter 260 'Abundance' was one of the ring leaders who helped create an event that pulled together many elements of the Lake Mead sailing scene. Participants ranged from Hobie cats to windsurfers to keelboats and trailer sailors. All gathered to celebrate life under sail. We're looking forward to seeing more of a the Lake Mead sailing population joining us for future Summer Sailstice events.
1st Place in the burgee contest!
It was blowing on Lake Mead on Summer Sailstice...
in fact it was blowing so hard the whole lake and shoreline tilted!
Like celebrations everywhere all kinds of windpowered vessels participated - windsurfers, dinghies, keelboats, trailor sailors all joined for a sail on Lake Mead.
The crowd that gathered for the day packed the facilities.
A large and varied fleet sailed for Summer Sailstice.
