Ralph Hewitt once again shared his love of sailing with more lucky folks on the coast of Nicaragua taking them out for the winter solstice aboard his Ericson, ‘No Bad Days’. Ralph wrote in to say, ‘this was from our Dec. 21st sailing trip with guests on "No Bad Days" Exploradores Marinos, (Sea Scouts) San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua. We sail all year.... What fun we enjoy with our youth program and taking folks out. Check out our what we do and come on down for some great ocean sailing. GET out of the Cold! Take a break from the land of "Stress & Excess" to live longer.’
Hard to argue with that sentiment and, going to his website, you learn more about the roots of his sentiment and life long love of sailing. In his ‘Tribute’ Hewett describes how it all started aboard a Sea Scout vessel in Vancouver, WA: ‘From the Men of the Sea Scout Ship # 630 “The Dragon” in Vancouver Washington in the 1950’s, the Men & Women of Sea Exploring ship “Gray Owl” Garland Texas 1970’s the tradition lives on now in San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua.’
While many of us have boats wrapped tight under tarps to survive the winter until next summer’s Summer Sailstice there are others enjoying sailing all year round. Of course, come June 21 Northern boats will be hitting their most idyllic sailing season and Southern latitudes will be dodging hurricanes and tropical humidity. Every sailors gets their season and the fortunate find ways to participate in as many of them as possible!
