This week Silver Waters Sailing Lessons and Charters is taking four people for free two-hour sailing lessons in Fair Haven Bay on Lake Ontario.
"On Wednesday two young women and I had a glorious sunset sail," said Sue Gateley, founder of Silver Waters. Two more lucky people head out Saturday with Gateley and her boat, Titania, in honor of the Sailstice.
“We are celebrating 15 years of teaching people how to sail here on Lake Ontario," Gateley, a former school teacher said.
Gateley launched Silver Waters Sailing in 1997 to teach people about sailing and Lake Ontario. Since then people from many walks of life have taken the tiller aboard Titania, her 32-foot-sloop — doctors, lawyers, farmers, men and women from the military, students, retirees, and a couple of adventurous nuns. Skipper Sue, as she is affectionately known, especially enjoys seeing other women take the helm to set their own course afloat.
From May through September Gateley sails the lake aboard Titania, which also helps her teach women and couples how to sail. In winter Gateley writes about sailing and Lake Ontario. Go to www.ChimneyBluff.com and check out Gateley's books, including the mostly true story about the adventurous cruise of Twinkle Toes the Cat. “Twinkle Toes and the Riddle of the Lake” is on sale now at her online store. Her latest book, published by The History Press of South Carolina, will be released in late summer.
