Singlehanded Transpac Starts on Summer Sailstice

May 25, 2025 by Heidi Benson Stagg

The Singlehanded Sailing Society (SSS) has been running the Singlehanded Transpacific Yacht Race (SHTP) in odd numbered since 1978. It starts in San Francisco and ends 2200 miles later in Hanalei Bay, Kauai, HI, and, this year, it kicks off on Summer Sailstice!

Gregory Ashby, a member of Richmond Yacht Club, will be sailing the SHTP for the second time, finishing third in 2018. He will be sailing his Beiley B-25, Akumu, with 11 other brave-hearted sailors at this writing. He sailed in the Doublehanded division of the 2024 Pacific Cup (San Francisco to Kaneohe Bay, Oahu, HI), on Morning Star, a Valiant 32, placing fourth.

His hope for this year's SHTP is to go sailing, have a good time, enjoy nature, set a record and win. Our kind of Sailstice sailor!
