Sail for Life Virtual Summer Sailstice Rally on ‘Second Life’
As expected unexpected things always seem to arise each year with Summer Saisltice. This year it’s discovering a world of virtual sailors. They've set up there online rendezvous here.
In some regards Summer Sailstice has always been a ‘virtual’ sailing rendezvous with sailors all over the world sailing ‘together’ but in different places – if that makes any sense. This year a sailing community which already sails in the virtual world of ‘Second Life’ will be joining by hoisting their digital sails on Summer Sailstice weekend. Beyond enjoying a virtual sail they’ll also be raising money to support the American Cancer Society.

Team Sail For Life Partners with Summer Sailstice in RL!
Dale Irata, Commodore of the Island Yacht Club in Second Life (http://www.iyc.org/sl/ ) and also the RL (Real Life) Commodore of the Island Yacht Club in Alameda, California ( http://www.iyc.org/ ) approached the Sail For Life Team with some great news! He had conversations with Mr. John Arndt, founder of Summer Sailstice and mentioned our community and fund-raising efforts for the American Cancer Society. Mr. Arndt was very interested in our community and invited us to take part in Summer Sailstice virtually!
We are working out all the details but mark your calendars for the weekend on June 18, 2011 to take part in the first annual Summer Sailstice of Second Life 2011! If you register through the RL Summer Sailstice page you will be eligible for RL prizes just like the RL sailors! We will be asking for a small donation on behalf of Team Sail For Life to take part in the event. Of course all donations go directly American Cancer Society to help eliminate cancer! For those of you without SL Sailboats, we will have free boats available at various locations around the SL Sailing Community.
If you are not out on your RL sailboat that weekend, plan to get out on your virtual sailboat in Second Life! There are great activities planned that weekend including live concerts and a HUGE carnival sponsored by Sailors Cove Estates. We are also planning a Grand Sail originating at the participating SL Yacht Clubs and ending at the Events in Sailors Cove. More information and details on registration and participation to come!

From a Summer Sailstice perspective we hope to see people out on RL water w/RL sails hoisted but we’re also not picky about how people actually sail. Though partial to a fresh breeze and some salt air a tall ship or a kite board or the world of virtual sailing all sound like a good choices to us perhaps especially if circumstances simply prevent you from actually being on the water for RL sailing on Summer Sailstice weekend.
